What is medication assisted treatment?

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is a treatment for substance abuse disorders that uses certain medications to help people move beyond addiction. It’s a highly effective approach for treating opioid addiction, including addiction to heroin and certain prescription pain medications.

MAT is highly customized and tailored to suit your specific needs and goals. Thorough blood testing gives your practitioner the information needed to create a personalized medication therapy plan. Blood panels look at the way your body metabolizes medication, information your provider uses to guide the MAT process.

Is medication assisted treatment my only option for recovery?

At My Next Steps of Morganton, medication assisted treatment is never the only resource used in the recovery process. The practice takes a holistic approach to treating substance use disorder, and team members understand the role that mental and emotional health play.

During your journey, you may choose to not only rely on carefully controlled medication to reduce cravings and help you move through the detoxification process. At the same time, you also work closely with a highly skilled therapist or counselor to improve all aspects of your mental health.

The forces that contribute to addiction and make it so difficult to move beyond substance use disorders are complex. There is far more involved than simply the way your body reacts to substances. Treating the whole person is a foundational principle at My Next Steps of Morganton.

How do I know if medication assisted treatment is right for me?

During your initial visit, your practitioner learns more about you and your history with substance use disorder. The information gleaned from this discussion, in addition to the results from your blood testing, helps shape your treatment planning.
